在坦桑尼亚北部海岸，马兹维岛海洋保护区自1975年成立以来，一直是该国历史最悠久的海洋保护区之一。这座岛屿曾覆盖着茂密的棕榈树，但因人类活动与自然侵蚀，如今已成为一座随潮汐涨落时隐时现的沙洲。尽管面积缩小，这里仍是东非最重要的绿海龟繁殖地，栖息着400多种鱼类、35种珊瑚，以及全球仅存于此的特有物种——马兹维岛共生虾（Tectopontonia maziwiae）。
当地社区与环保组织（如Dorobo基金）自2005年起共同守护这片海域，其中“马兹维海龟保护计划”尤为关键。通过将受潮汐威胁的龟巢迁至安全地带，已成功孵化放归6万多只幼龟。这一行动展现了海洋保护与渔民生计之间的微妙平衡。
