奥茨胡恩的鸵鸟农场，或许是世界上少数能直接观察到鸵鸟日常生活的奇妙之地。在这里，不仅可以近距离接触南非本土鸵鸟，还能见到来自肯尼亚的红鸵鸟和津巴布韦的蓝鸵鸟。更为稀有的是，这里还生活着来自澳大利亚的世界第二大鸟类—鸸鹋，以及珍贵的白色鸵鸟。鸵鸟，这一地球上存活了四到六千万年的古老生物，最初沿地中海西岸、中国东部至蒙古范围内生活繁衍。大约在一百万年前，鸵鸟随着众多大型哺乳动物一道向南迁徙至非洲各地。至1652年，当Jan van Riebeeck登陆开普敦时，西开普地区已能见到大量鸵鸟的身影。而鸵鸟农场的起步，则是通过捕捉野生幼鸟以及对野生鸟巢中蛋的孵化，很快，这一地区的所有鸵鸟均已驯化。奥茨胡恩的农民们是鸵鸟产业的先驱，19世纪中期，鸵鸟农业在奥茨胡恩地区兴起，使得奥茨胡恩闻名遐迩，成为世界鸵鸟之都。农民们发现紫花苜蓿是鸵鸟理想的饲料后，奥茨胡恩便建立了南非首批紫花苜蓿田。这里独特的微咸土壤，充足的灌溉水源以及干燥的气候，为鸵鸟提供了近乎原生态的栖息地。值得一提的是，从1859年起，南非就开始出口鸵鸟羽毛，直至1914年前的十年间，鸵鸟羽毛的出口价值仅次于黄金、羊毛和钻石，位居南非出口商品第四位。鸵鸟羽毛繁荣期间，南非农场饲养的鸵鸟超过77600只，到1914年，这一数字接近一百万。然而，随着第一次世界大战引发的全球社会经济影响，这一产业几乎在一夜之间崩溃。在奥茨胡恩的鸵鸟农场中，游客不仅能了解鸵鸟养殖的悠久历史与繁盛衰败，更有机会近距离感受这些庞大生物的魅力。

Absolutely brilliant. What a great opportunity to get up close and personal with the ostriches.The tour takes about an hour and it is very informative.At a measly cost of R5 you get an opportunity to buy a bucket of feed to provide the ostriches but beware, they have zero table manners and hold onto your bucket tightly. There is a small coffee and gift shop on premises with plenty of parking. If you are going in Winter bring a jacket and umbrella along.

Out of the two ostrich farms I explored, Safari Ostrich Farm truly stood out. The tractor ride through the farm, combined with the informative tour on ostrich life, made it an unforgettable experience. If you only have time for one farm, this is the one to choose!

Kids loved this place and they had good fun here.. Came to know a lot of ostriches and how they survive.. A good educational trip.

Wonderful experience learning about ostriches and seeing them up close. The tractor ride through the farm was very interesting, and we learned a lot about the different types of ostriches. Make sure to buy a feed bucket so you can feed them. I would definitely recommend visiting Safari Ostrich Farm. The gift shop also has a lot of beautiful ostrich products ranging from inexpensive to expensive.
